From tagging the sewer pipes as a teen, to watching my older brother spray large murals (girls don’t spray), I’ve loved graffiti and street art most of my life. I was, am, constantly drawn to the creativity and while everyone else seems to scan their phones on the train, I scan the rail corridors in admiration. This viewing obsession turned into a gallery of over 4000 photos – at least.
While this unintended project captures the unwanted beauty in the street, what it doesn’t capture is the community of artists keen to have each others backs online and tagging my posts where tagging is due. I don’t how I squeezed in to that but never have I not felt welcomed
This first zine .slapstick – girls don’t spray is a first release of some of these shots mostly from the Inner West, but with interstate and international photos from a recent trip. girls don’t spray is a tribute to the not so hidden world of sticker graffiti and a representation of a 90’s wannabe female graff teen who hopes to inspire her own daughter. If he can, she can.
